Nielsen Norman Group was founded by renowned design and usability authorities Jakob Nielsen and Don Norman . The goal of NN/g was and is to conduct high-quality user experience research and provide interface design recommendations based on empirical evidence. In 2000, Bruce “Tog” Tognazzini , who worked with Norman at Apple and with Nielsen at Sun, joined NN/g as a Principal. Tog has a long history in this field, being one of the very first human interface designers at Apple, a popular speaker, and author of best-selling books.
In addition to providing advisory services to clients, NN/g began presenting user experience and usability seminars. In 2000 and 2001, NN/g produced the User Experience World Tour visiting 11 cities in the U.S., U.K., Europe, Asia and Australia. At a time when the Internet bubble was rapidly expanding with no end in sight, these events were attended by an unprecedented number of accomplished user experience professionals.
The success of the World Tour emphasized the desire and need for thoughtful, practical advice about how to design useful and usable user interfaces. In 2002, the events morphed into a series of focused, full-day, immersive training courses that teach useful guidelines based on current research findings and principles. We currently offer over 40 courses through our Usability Week events offered worldwide through each year.
In 2001, NN/g researchers began conducting independent user research studies and publishing reports to help interface designers, developers, product managers and anyone else who needs empirical findings to both guide designs and, most importantly, help them make the case for investing in usability and user experience.
NN/g researchers continue to study timely topics and our reports collection now includes over 60 publications covering numerous topics and including guidelines, best practices, case studies, and methodologies.
