Qualitative tests are the most traditional form of user testing, grounded in user-behavior analysis and aimed at discovering what does and doesn't work in the design.
The primary goal is to learn what parts of the design to maintain and what parts to improve and how to better serve your users and business. These tests generate actionable redesign findings, but no statistics.
This method involves one-on-one, expert moderated usability sessions where participants perform tasks using your interface(s). The goal is to identify issues and determine why these issue arise. In-person usability studies typically involve observing between 5-10 users and testing generally takes between 1 to 2 days. Research has found that testing with 5 users generally unveils 85% of the usability problems.

Quantitative tests are conducted to identify trends through very specific, targeted task assignments to larger sample sizes (N=30 or more). Quantitative testing helps define what is not working and to what degree, whereas qualitative testing can unveil why interfaces may not be successful.
Quantitative usability studies can generally be planned, executed and analyzed remotely and in a short time frame depending on the amount of tasks being tested.
Success rate and time on task testing is used to quantify user effort and risk of interface failure. If your conversions, funnel statistics, sales and/or customer feedback is not meeting your objectives, Success Rate and Time on Task Testing produces useful data (for triangulation) and can help identify poor interaction design, interface elements and/or content that are negatively impacting site success.
Tree tests measure the findability of elements within an existing and/or proposed information architecture without any influence from the interface design. Tree tests measure the intuitiveness of label and link grouping, hierarchy and nomenclature. If you are conflicted on naming of sections, pages, links and labels in your site, this test can identify the most problematic names and help us define new labels that will improve findability of your content.
First-click tests are used to evaluate the intuitiveness of buttons, links and other on-page content within the context of the design. This is ideal for testing menu/mega-menu designs and mission-critical pages (e.g., landing pages). Click tests can be conducted on rough sketches, wireframes, polished design comps or fully designed interfaces. If the representation of your navigation and content is in question, a click test can tell you if the design is helping or hurting findability.
Prominence and recall tests are conducted to determine what interface elements users notice, remember and correctly interpret. Because user attention is brief and fixations are limited, identifying what they notice and how they interpret those elements is key to developing more effective design and content.
